A new dawn at Black Pirates Rugby Football Club camp broke not many seasons ago and with it, came a different breed of players that raked in hard-earned victories that preceded jubilations amongst the fans and the players themselves, which caught many off-guard and ultimately upset the status quo in Ugandan rugby. Like the youthful sea robbers popularly quote “Take what you can. Give nothing back”, we ended the 2017-2018 season with a treble in our loot on top of a spirited 400 days’ unbeaten run and left in our wake numerous disbelieving opponents seething with rage and seeking vengeance.

A fresh season is upon us and the chapter of our illustrious triumphs at sea will forever be inked in the books of history. Despite the sweet memories still being fresh at the back of our minds, the ship is back at sea for the new season and our opponents have definitely re-organised themselves to crack this pot of a dynamic style of catch-and-pass rugby and nip the bud from our dominance before it engulfs them.

Despite the melancholic mood in camp after our Uganda Cup final loss to the Betway Kobs in a game we felt should have been won early in the first half, the players are back in full force for training to capture the technical team’s eye and earn the right to don the prestigious jersey on game day. A cold bush war for playing positions especially involving the newly promoted lads from our franchise team Sailors who were instrumental in the side’s championship league victory is brewing on the training grounds. Furthermore, as is expected for any team with a number of brilliant players when national duty comes calling, we are most privileged to have ambassadors representing us and are equally most vulnerable missing our perennial top performers.

The technical team have brought all hands on deck to refine the game plan to reap the best fruits from these contests and suppress the effects of having players on national duty with a master plan that will see us retaining the league title at the end of the season. The intending players will have to master these plans and techniques before the season kicks off this Saturday in Jinja. Head Coach Musinguzi Bobby highlighted that knowing our squad does not possess superior physical qualities against other clubs in the league; the team is to continue developing the style of play to suit our strong points by making the game more expansive over the width of the pitch and even much faster.
