The Stanbic Black Pirates will tomorrow hold its Annual General Meeting at their new home, The Kings Park in Bweyogerere from 2pm. The club will vote to adopt a new constitution and also elect office bearers. The club started playing in the national league in 1996.
The founding members of the club are Messrs Ojambo Stephen Paul (1st Captain and former Head Coach), Umah Tete Patrick (1st Treasurer and former Chairman), Owor Edmond (Current Chairman), Kyakuha Innocent (1st Legal Officer), Genza Peter and Ssozi Edward Thaddeus Kimanje (1st Head Coach). The club is one of the founding member clubs of the Uganda Rugby Union and it has a second side called Sailors. The club also has a Women’s team named Black Pearls.
Many of the current players and administrators countrywide would never know the pains and sacrifices of the early years which the Pirates’ founders and early players encountered. According to Mr. Umah Tete Patrick the biggest challenge was the high turnover of players with about half of the team changing each week. They were sourcing for players from the crowds before games!
They were for all the years till late last year based at the Kampala Rugby Union Football Club (Legends) and would have their training days on Tuesday and Thursday. The Club in the early days would have their EXCO meetings Bi-monthly and held their AGMs on the first weekend of January. The Club saw some very lean days with poor results and lack of sponsors. The club’s core members have been contributing since 1996 to date.
The Pirates had United Insurance Company (1999), American Insurance Group (2001), Standard Chartered Bank (2001), G4S as some of their sponsors in the earlier years. They now have the Stanbic Bank and Little Ritz restaurant.

The 2017/8 season has so far been their best in terms of performance on the pitch when they literally swept away all available competitions locally. In their 23 years of existence they have surpassed many older clubs in terms of successes and this is likely to be maintained in the foreseeable future.
The Club started promotion of the game in Schools Progressive SSS (1996), Mengo SS (1997), and Namilyango College, for one year (1999). St. Mary’s Kisubi and Kings College came on board in 2000 and 2001 respectively.

Mr. Ssewakiryanga Richard was the Club’s first Chairman and later handed over to Mr. Umah Tete Patrick who also in turn handed over to Mr. Mbalu George who passed the baton to Mr. Owor Edmond. The early Captains were Messrs. Ojambo SP (1996), Eric Baliruno (1997), Patrick Angulo (1998), David Kirabira (1999/2000), Herbert Wafula (2001) Peter Lubega (2002).
The Club takes pride in its great traditions and structures and tomorrow’s AGM will be a continuation of what was envisioned about 24 years ago by a few determined students who met at the Makerere Guild Canteen to plan for what has now become one of Uganda’s best Rugby Playing Clubs.
All the best Sea Robbers!
